A Good Experience with United Airlines (UA) 12/2007

Category: In-Flight Service 2008-01-21

Previously, I wrote about our not too good experience on UA flight from HKG to LAX. I don't hate UA, as matter as fact, I like UA. Most of our experience on UA has been good and positive.

Just before our Hong Kong trip, I had to make a business trip to Boston. Due to the snow storm, my flight was delayed and I missed my connecting flight back to SFO. Because of this, I experienced the friendliness and efficiency of the UA staffs, and how UA takes care of its top tier members........

In December of 2007, I flew to Boston to meet with a client. As soon as my UA Flight #166 landed in Boston Logan International Airport at 7:00 am , I got a message from my colleague that my client's flight to Boston was cancelled due to the bad weather. Because this was a short meeing, I booked a same day late flight back to SFO via LAX. Now, my client wouldn't be here for the meeting so I had to wait in the United Red Carpet Club for about 11 hours (plus few more hours due to the delay) for my return flight.
At the time, there was a big snow storm in the Northeast area in the U.S., many flights were either delayed or cancelled. By early afternoon, I found out that my UA Flight UA#167 was going to be delayed for 30 minutes. I had already have a tight connection for my flight to SFO from LAX, 30 minutes delay was going to make it even tighter. Then, my flight got delayed further and further. Luckily, it was not cancelled. As soon as I knew that I was not going to make my connecing flight to SFO, I ask the Red Carpet Agent to protect me and confimed me on First Class flight to SFO the next day. Since I would be forced over night in Los Angeles, I also asked the agent for accommodations for hotel and meal. She made a note in the computer system and told me to look for the gate agent in LAX for the vouchers.
When UA Flight #167 landed in LAX, it was almost 11:00pm. When I got out of the planes, I saw some passengers from other flights had already been waiting in the service counters to be helped. I just rushed to the Red Carpet Club which would be closing soon and asked the club agent for the vouchers. He checked the system and told me that the vouchers had been issued and he could not re-issue them. Quickly, he found out who issued the vouchers and who had them, then, he rushed out to the terminal to find the agent who was holding my vouchers.
Less then 2 minutes, he came back with my vouchers. Even it's near the closing time, he still patiently explained to me how to use the vouchers, where to go to catch the hotel shuttle bus and what to do the next day when checking in for my flight to SFO. I thanked him and left the Red Carpet Club.

While I was leaving the club, I called H and told him that I would be on my way to the hotel and there's no need for him to worry about me.

I waited for almost 15 minutes for the hotel shuttle bus. When I walked into the hotel lobby, it was packed with guests whoes flights were either delayed or cancelled. I guess the hotel staffs are so used to this, they quickly and efficiently checked the guests in so that they could go to their rooms to rest.

Once I got to my room, I was so dead tired. After I took a long hot shower, I quickly fell asleep in this comfortable bed ......

Oh, by the way, while I was waiting for my vouchers in UA's Red Carpet Club in LAX, I saw Patti LaBelle !! I was going to ask her if I could have a picture with her but I didn't go ask. Now, come to think of it, I should have asked her ......

United Airlines Red Carpet Club in Boston Logan International Airport -- I was sitting in the corner chair and almost fell asleep for about 13 hours to wait for my return flight.
Food and beverage serving counters -- Within 13 hours, I had bagels w/cream cheese, yogurt, breakfast bars, coffee, tea, Twix candy bars, jelly beans, veggie w/dip, banana, chips .......
I was confirmed in First Class on UA Flight #857 the following day
Hotel Voucher -- A night in Hilton LAX Airport
US$10.00 Meal Voucher -- Be Aware !! Not all vendors accept meal vouchers. Some vendors only accept meal vouchers from certain airlines. Ask the vendors first before make the purchse.
I was so surprised to see the two full size beds when I walk into this room in Hilton LAX Airport. Because I was expecting to stay in a small twin size bed room, since this was a voucher stay. There is even a view to see the planes taking off from this room.
The room is quite spacious.
It has a very good size closet and bathroom
