Early morning visit to Tokyo Tsukiji fish market 04/2009

I visited the Tsukiji fish market for the first time quite a few years ago, and was hoping that I could take our son Alex for a visit during our Easter vacation to Tokyo.
For a few weeks in late 2008, the Tsukiji market was closed to visitors. Fortunately, it reopened to visitors in early 2009.

One of the big attraction is the tuna auction early in the mornings. Here, tunas are lined up for the daily auction to commence.

In order to get to the fish market in time for the auction, we had to get up around 4:30. Luckily, the ANA Intercontinental hotel we stayed at is only minutes away from the subway station.
We got onto the subway a little after 5:00am, and this early in the morning, the subway cars are relatively empty.
After one transfer, we got to the station for the fish market, and there are printed signs on the platform pointing to the market.
After about a five minute walk, we arrived at the market that is already very busy.
Lots of stalls are busy doing business, with narrow bed engine driven delivery carts darting all over making deliveries.
Look at these large scallops still in the shell!
Before we found the line for visitors, we stumbled onto an open roll-up door of the auction hall, lots of people are peeking through the door, and we joined the crowd.
Look at the rows and rows of tuna, the auctioneer quickly goes through the inventory, and the sold tunas are marked for delivery to the winning buyers.
Lots of tourists taking videos and still pictures, and even more are peeking in under the roll-up door.
The auction pace was very fast but orderly, we were told that the auction only last around an hour each morning.
Carts and ice boxes are staged just outside the auction hall to deliver the seafood.
