There are many Japanese restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area, and our favorite is Hotaru located in the city of San Mateo. |
Occupying a small store front on 3rd Avenue steps away from El Camino Real, Hotaru is very popular with the workers and residents in the surrounding quaint San Mateo downtown area. |
Hotaru opens 365 days a year, promptly at 11:30 am every day. When we arrived at 11:35 this morning, several tables were already occupied by hungry customers. |
With only about 60 seats on the ground level, the restaurant fills up very fast. |
Signs for daily special sushi in front of a small counter. |
Fresh fish and seafood in the refrigerated case waiting for sashimi and sushi lovers. |
The set menus are usually very good values. |
My usual favorite is the Bento Box for $9.95 |
Service is usually very fast. My Bento Box consists of: Maguro and Sake Nigiri sushi California Roll Chicken Teriyaki Vegetable and Shrimp Tempura Grilled Mackerel Salad Tsukemono Rice Miso soup |
Thre is so much food and I usually get a free refill of steamed rice. There is enough food for a very large appetite. |
Another of our favorite is the Nigiri sushi set, for $11.00 |
A fine assortment of sushi: Maguro Shino Maguro Ebi Inari Tamago Tekkyu roll |
Finish with a steaming hot bowl of udon, a great lunch especially on a cold winter day. |
