High speed Beijing-Tianjin train 12/2008

During our visit to Beijing in December 2008, we needed to go to Tianjin for a few hours. Taking a taxi would take well over an hour for the trip, combined with bad driving conditions and freeway closures due to unusual snow fall, we decided to take the high-speed train instead.
The Beijing South train station is specifically built as a terminus for the high-speed rail-road link between Beijing and Tianjin. This station was completed in 2008, and is designed more like a very modern airport than a traditional railroad station.
Aerial artist drawing shows the surrounding areas adjacent to the massive station.
For our trip to Wuqing (a suburb of Tianjin), we bought first class tickets, and the fare was only 48 yuan, around US$ 7.00.
The station is a multi-story design, and the soaring ceilings provide a very spacious feel.
The interior of the station reminds me of a ultra-modern airport terminal.
A large seating area is reserved for first class passengers waiting to board their train.
Another separate waiting area is dedicated for passengers ticketed in luxury sleeper service cabins.

The standard waiting area is also quite spacious.
Snack vendors located near the gates charge a very reasonable prices for their offerings. A box lunch is only 20 yuan, about US$ 3.00.
The quality of the food offered seems to be comparable to normal snack stands, and the prices are also about the same. There does not seem to be a significant premium added to the prices due to the location inside the Beijing South railroad terminal.

2010-03-17 21:26:51 (GMT-6) Huey: Patrick, depending on the route, it is between 39-52 km from the Beijing Airport to the Beijing South Station. The airport is northeast of Beijing, and the station is in the southern of the city. I suggest taking a taxi, probably 150 yuan or so.
2010-03-17 18:06:08 (GMT-6) Patrick: How far away is the train station from the airport?
2010-02-07 15:12:26 (GMT-6) Alex: Also, both 1st and 2nd class was available from Beijing. First was sold out from Tianjin until the departure 30 minutes later, so we took 2nd instead.
2010-02-07 14:39:39 (GMT-6) Alex: Helena, we bought our tickets at the Beijing South station on the same day as the trip. With a departure every 15-20 minutes, no problem at all.
2010-02-07 13:38:10 (GMT-6) Helena: Hi, how can I purchase the Tianjin Beijing ticket inadvance? Or can I easily get the ticket for same day departure?
2009-03-13 11:24:12 (GMT-6) Patrick: Thank you for the information, this is exactly what I needed for my upcoming trip to Beijing.
